The Dynamics of Whanaungatanga (DoW) is a systematic framework created by Dr Pā Henare Tate PhD for the application of traditional Māori concepts and principles of whanaungatanga (relationships).
The knowledge that informs DoW draws on the lived experiences, teachings, and wisdom of kaumātua and kuia (elders) from across Aotearoa New Zealand. It brings together traditional Māori concepts and principles into a systematic approach for strengthening spirituality, wellbeing, and relationships.
At its heart, DoW is grounded in the principle of whanaungatanga—the practice of building and maintaining meaningful relationships.
It recognises that the quality of our relationships shapes our wellbeing and success in life.
Through this system, the Dynamics of Whanaungatanga provides principles and values for strengthening wellbeing through quality relationships, supporting holistic wellbeing across all areas of life.
The DoW Goal of Life is in everything we do:
address, enhance, and restore the Tapu (sacredness and wellbeing) of Tāngata (people), so they have the Mana (power and confidence)
to fulfil their roles and achieve their goals in life.
This DoW framework formed the foundation of Dr Pā Henare Tate’s doctoral research and thesis describing Some Foundations Towards a Systematic Māori Theology, that was published as an award-winning book He Puna Iti i Te Ao Mārama—A Little Spring in the World of Light.
Suitable for use in education, social services, justice, leadership, and cultural contexts, the Dynamics of Whanaungatanga provides a resource for discussion, understanding, and practical application of indigenous knowledge in the contemporary world.
It was the hope of Pā Henare Tate that this information might become a wellspring of knowledge and a source of inspiration for all those who may wish to drink from it.
The Dynamics of Whanaungatanga (DoW) is owned and operated by DoW Holdings Limited in association with Kāwei Limited.
